When that lemon comes scampering into our lives at the most unexpected time, it’s best to have a backup plan and then some. Life’s little lemons just turned a bit sweeter with a plumbing specialist in your back pocket and our handy plumbing emergency kit listed below.
– A five-litre bucket doubles up as a handy tool holder that catches swooshing leaks mid-project.
– A regular and heavy-duty plunger. Each plunger works on its own, but sometimes we just need more unclogging power.

Spluttering and sandy bottoms“, Bosman plumbing gave us a quick checklist on what to do in a water cut emergency and who and when to call to have it all checked out.
When dealing with geysers or other hot water appliances, it is always a good idea to have these looked at and maintained every year.
Thermostat and element damage are the most common causes for the lack of hot water in a home. These components of a geyser are easily repaired or replaced, and the best part is that it does not require the removal of the geyser. It’s helpful to know the make and model of your current hot water system; this will save time in repairs and preparing plumbing service for the call out. However, the geyser will still need to be drained to replace an element and assess the system’s health.
Always keep an eye, and ear out for any unfamiliar sounds or unusual dripping from overflow or pan. If a geyser fails, know where the water shut off valves are and disconnect the mains, water, and power.

In our previous blog, “
Dribbling hoses and stinky toes”, we had a quick chat about water pressure, interrupted water due to a water pipe burst and who to call to have it all checked out. Though water cuts are few and far between, they can disrupt a household like no other.
Most households should have some emergency kit to hold them over. Remember to keep a little stash of fresh water for each family member, including any pets and livestock you might have.
The aftermath can be just as frustrating. Low pressure and gurgling pipes, block faucets and even sandy residue leaking through the pipes. Bosman Plumbing has provided us with a few culprits, but before you start running around like a headless chicken, contact your neighbour or consult your local informative council group. There might be an outage or unplanned maintenance.
Once the water cut is over and the maintenance is complete, do a quick check. Open all the cold taps within your home and have them run for about 2 minutes, or until they run clear. The same can then be done with hot water taps until the hot water is warm and has come to temperature. As these turn on a closed system, we always run the cold water first to flush the system.
Let them run for a little longer for spluttering or spitting taps until the air pockets have passed. As we have previously explained, filtered faucets and heads can be cleaned and rinsed.

With a new concept blog in our back pocket and the little kiddies back at school, mums and dads finally have a chance to breathe. Dinner and dishes, shopping and school runs, homework and cricket practice and swimming, and hopefully, warm showers and baths if you can get the little critters into them at night.
Unfortunately, not all things always go to plan, and if we aren’t experiencing some load shedding, the water pipe down the road had an epic temper tantrum that’s left your home with a slow drip, barely enough to run the shower.
Though water cuts are few and far between, it’s always good to have a backup buddy that will be able to help. Low water pressure can easily be detected, either by mains or municipal with a water pressure gauge. There can be many reasons for low water pressure, and with that Bosman Plumbing has our back!
