In our previous blog, “Be better, together”, Bosman Plumbing shed tears and cheers with their clients as we watched South Africa and the competing athletes bring home medal after medal. As a country, we stood together in pride, watching our champions take their place on the podium. We are proudly South African, and we are “better together”.
Every year, in August, South Africa marks Women’s Month, though slightly off date from international woman’s day, August holds significance as we pay tribute to the women who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August 1956 in protest of the extension of Pass Laws to women.
The protest was led by Lilian Ngoyi, Helen Joseph, Rahima Moosa, and Sophia Williams. With 14,000 petitions and 100,000 signatures left outside the prime minister’s door, the woman held a thirty-minute silent protest. After, songs were sung to honour the event, to ensure their voices were heard. “Wathint’Abafazi Wathint’imbokodo”, which translates to “Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock,” was composed for the event. It is still considered a symbol of strength.
We pay tribute not only to the thousands of women who marched on that day in 1956, but also to the pioneers of the women’s movement in this country, dating back to 1913. Charlotte Maxeke established the ANC Women’s League engaging in the struggle for freedom.
We remember the names of Ray Alexander Simons, Elizabeth Mafikeng and Elizabeth Abrahams associated with the struggles of women. In the 1940s, Amina Pahad and Gadijah Christopher were amongst the first volunteers to occupy the 1946 Passive Resistance Campaign on Umbilo Road in Durban.
We celebrate and remember the woman from our past, the mother’s and grandmother’s, the teachers, and caregivers. The nurses and leaders who bring change, wisdom, and love.
Bosman plumbing wishes all women strength and conviction, gratitude, and abundance during this month. Remain resilient, remain patient, ever-loving, and strong and “better together”.

In our previous blog, “
The future of clean water and sanitation”, Bosman Plumbing gave us a glimpse of our future. How urbanization will affect our ability to “produce” clean drinking and “fit for use” water and sanitation access.
With the Tokyo Olympics in full swing, we have been privy to an inside look at the future of “Zero-Carbon” and the United Nations’ 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) addressing such issues as climate change, as well as sustainable consumption and production, calls for the maximum use of renewable energy sources during the games.
With a lofty goal of “zero wasting,” the organizers aim to achieve 99 percent reuse or recycling across all procured items, goods and delivery, to minimize resource waste and degradation of ecosystems.
Did you know that approximately 5,000 medals will be awarded at the games? Those medals have been forged from precious recycled metals recovered from used smartphones, digital cameras, computers, and other small electronic devices handed in by consumers for that purpose.
With all eyes on Tokyo, we share in their journey, learn from their experience and cheer on all participating athletes making history during this Global pandemic.
South Africa will have 185 athletes, making it the largest contingent the country has ever sent to the Olympics, with South Africa competing in 17 of the 33 Olympic sports on offer.
Though too many to name individually, Bosman Plumbing wishes each athlete ‘good luck’ with their tourney and a safe and healthy return.

In our previous blog,
“In space no one can hear you”, Bosman Plumbing took us to space and back and dived headfirst into the fascinating modern marvel of reclamation of water on the International Space Station. The history of water and sanitation is fascinating, and the sky is genuinely not the limit.
Water management and sanitation have come a long way from using aqueducts and underground pipes, washing away and diluting wastewater into bodies of water. We have built marvels of engineering to store water from the Basilica Cistern to every day Jojo tank for our gardens.
Though all the advances made in the reclamation of water in our daily lives and even in space, the fact remains that large portions of our population have no running water in their homes, no fitted internal sanitation, nor access to drinking water.
It is claimed that by 2050, there will be over 10 billion people living. Of that, 2/3 will be living in urban settings, all needing adequate water and sanitation. Urbanization is on the rise, and in some cities like Mumbai, already present. Urbanization in Africa will soon outpace other regions of the world, and currently, 60% of its urban population lives in slums. Globally, about 5 billion people will be living in cities by 2030; most of these cities already under stress with reduced water and extreme scarcity of drinking water.
Climate change is likely to make the situation worse. Every drop of water must be saved, recycled, and reused. All water is potentially good water if treated “fit for purpose.”
A concerted global effort in urban planning, infrastructure, and innovation could be the only hope to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
Bosman Plumbing urges our community to come together, reduce, reuse, and recycle to ensure a sustainable future for the next generation to come.
As industry experts with over 25 years of experience Bosman Plumbing has a dedicated team, teaming with a wealth of experience. Their mission to provide you with the absolute best this century has to offer.
